Revisiting the 2018 Center Fielders' Forecast

The last 2018 top 10 list was in predicting how center fielders would fare for that season.  Los Angeles Angels' outfielder, Mike Trout was largely viewed as the best of that position, as he was a near-unanimous pick to be selected for the top spot to start the year.

Also, the Milwaukee Brewers had acquired both Christian Yelich and Lorenzo Cain, so the Shredder rated both of them as center fielders, even though they would go on to play for the same team.

I wanted to test myself to see how my predictions would stack up against the other analysts.  Here we will be looking at the results of myself (Alan Lu), the Shredder, Bill James, Mike Petriello, Vince Gennaro, Ben Lindbergh, Brian Kenny, Preston Wilson, and the fans from social media (whom I counting as one analyst for simplicity purposes).

So how did I do?  Well, here's how we all did.

......

I had some good picks, and not so good ones, but overall, I think I could've done better here.  Like virtually everyone else, I picked Mike Trout to be the top center fielder in 2018, and he certainly ended up being that from a Fangraphs WAR standpoint.

I also rated Christian Yelich to be a top 3 finisher, and he turned in an excellent season, as his fangraphs WAR only trailed Trout among players listed here.  I also was well aware that then St. Louis Cardinals' center fielder, Tommy Pham had turned in an excellent 2017 season, and I had correctly picked him to have a very good 2018 season, even though most of his stellar production ended up helping the Tampa Bay Rays after the midseason trade.

However, George Springer and Charlie Blackmon did not fare as well as expected, and I swung and missed with my predictions on Kevin Kiermaier, Jackie Bradley Jr., Odubel Herrera, and Byron Buxton.  Overall, I had plenty of misses as well, which hurt my score more so than expected.

The Shredder did a very good job of making their 2018 center fielders' picks overall.  I was kind of surprised that they had Tommy Pham as the second-best center fielder for the 2018 season, but even so, Pham turned in another solid year that season.  They also had correctly identified Chris Taylor and Michael Conforto as players that would fare well, and the Shredder's misses did not hurt them nearly as much as for the other analysts.

Also, former St. Louis Cardinals' outfielder, Preston Wilson also quietly had a very good forecast of 2018 center fielders.  He was the renegade analyst who decided to not pick Mike Trout to be his top center fielder for the 2018 season, but he did correctly identify Tommy Pham and Chris Taylor as players that would have good seasons that year.  He was in the ball park and within range on a lot of center fielders listed here, and he also correctly picked Ender Inciarte to fare well that season as well.

Overall, I would give myself a C grade for my 2018 center fielders' forecast.  I had some good picks in projecting Yelich and Pham to have very good seasons, but I also had plenty of misses as well.  I got some hits at the top, but I also missed more often than I should have.  Overall, my list was a rather "meh" list.

So in me vs. the Shredder among making picks for the 2018 MLB season, I will say, this one ends in a tie.  It can be surmised that neither I nor them definitively made better picks than the other when judging the forecasts as a whole.

To sum it up, and I gave this a shot, and I had some swings and misses.  You win some, and you lose some.  Well, hope you enjoyed this, and thank you for reading.

Thank you for reading, and thanks to Brewers Nation for providing the top 10 lists of analysts.  (I'm a St. Louis Cardinals' fan, but in this case, they did a good job of recapping what happened for all of the top 10 lists.)
